Leslie and I attended an art exhibit on one of our recent trips; we had to walk up an ungodly amount of stairs to view paintings, sculptures, and sketches hung on dark walls or placed on weathered tables, all contained in the rather forlorn surroundings of a 19th century building that has seen better days, but upon entering one of the rooms, we spied a young artist placing an LP on a vintage turntable and when the music started playing, it was Ol’ Blue Eyes himself.
Vinyl records are so popular at the moment, it’s tough for the manufacturers to keep up with demand and Frank Sinatra is one of the artists those young people are clambering for. What’s great for fans is the announcement that six of Frank’s albums are going to be released on various dates this year in vinyl. You can expect to find, “Songs For Swingin’ Lovers!” “Ring-A-Ding Ding!” “That’s Life,” “All the Way,” “Sinatra-Basie: An Historic Musical First,” and “Sinatra at the Sands” at some point in 2016.
There is a quality to vinyl music that appeals to Baby Boomers such as myself because of the snaps and pops, plus the action of delicately removing an album from its sleeve and placing in upon the turntable is relaxing in some ways – there’s a nostalgia about it all. But to Millennials, it’s just cool, like that feeling you get of discovering something new, even if it’s really not new.
And guess what? Sinatra certainly did his job setting the mood at that art exhibit because Leslie and I have a cool, new painting hanging on the wall.
